TRIP PREPARATION

COVID19 VACCINES

As of 03 March 2023 Japan requires 3 doses of COVID19 vaccine, including a booster dose OR a negative test; test accepted are: CLEIA/ECLIA quantitive antigen test, LAMP, NEAR, Next Generation Sequence, PCR, RT-PCR, Smart Amp. TMA or TRC.This does not apply to passengers younger than 18 years, traveling with their vaccinated parents.

PASSPORTS

A valid passport with 6 months or more validity and at least two free and clear pages.

Cash & Credit Cards

Japan is still largely a cash-based society, so make sure to have enough yen on hand. You can withdraw cash from ATMs at convenience stores or post offices. Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities and tourist areas, but it is a good idea to have cash on hand for smaller purchases

Language and Culture

Japanese is spoken by nearly the entire population and only very few are able to speak english. Japanese culture has been heavily influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shintoism, which are the country's major religions. Respect for elders, harmony and group consensus are highly valued in Japanese society. Japanese culture is known for its unique art forms such as calligraphy, origami, ikebana (flower arrangement) and tea ceremonies. Traditional clothing includes the kimono, which is still worn for special occasions.

Restaurant bookings

We have paid careful consideration to booking restaurants in Japan to give you a good spread on high quality culinary experiences that are Japanese - we have also paid attention to certain ingredients that Laurie will not enjoy. Dining in Japan at the better restaurants is a very much respect and pride driven affair for restauranteurs. We have got into some of the most sought after restaurants in Japan and it's been important because food is such a huge part of the experience there. Some of them are well known and others through recommendations on the ground. The best restaurants in Japan require one to choose your meal upon making the reservations and I took an executive decision to do that for you in order to not miss out on any opportunities as they came up. We have also got you into some restaurants that one can only get into if one has local social influence. If we need to cancel a booking we will need to do so with as much notice as possible and will almost always be charged a fee or the entire meal cost.

Gratuities

In Japan, tipping or leaving gratuities is not a common practice, and it may even be considered rude or offensive in some situations. Instead of tipping, the Japanese focus on providing excellent service as part of their culture of hospitality and customer service.

Travel insurance

Adequate, comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you, as well as any dependents/travelling companions, for the duration of the trip is a compulsory requirement and you should ensure you obtain sufficient cover prior to arrival at destination. It should include cover in respect of, but not limited to, the following eventualities:

Compulsory Insurance

Emergency evacuation expenses

Medical expenses

Repatriation expenses

Covid19 expenses

CLASSIC FILMS TO WATCH IN PREPARATION FOR ANIME CULTURE

  • Spirited Away
  • My Neighbor Totoro

travelling by train in japan -baggage-

The day before we embark on a train journey most of your baggage will be sent ahead via courier. This is common practice in Japan. We will need to deliver this to the bellman's desk by 3pm the day before departure. In the case of traveling from Toyko via Hakone to Kyoto, you will need to pack an overnight bag to sustain your stay in Hakone. One arrival in Kyoto, you will be reunited with the remainder of your baggage. The same applies to your journey from Kyoto to Toyko where you will need to send your baggage the day before departure, keeping an overnight bag to sustain your last night in Kyoto.

MEDICATION

Over-the-Counter Medication:

While numerous medications are easily available in Western countries without a prescription, Japan takes a much harder line on certain ingredients.

The following are prohibited:

  • Any medicine containing Amphetamine or Phenylaminopropane.
  • This includes (but is not limited to) common OTC medications such as Tylenol and Advil.

Prescription Medication:

In general, visitors to Japan are permitted to enter the country with prescription medicine without any special procedures if they adhere to the following conditions:

  • It is only for your personal use
  • It is not a prohibited or controlled drug in Japan
